Can My Car Be A Little Over The Crosswalk Line When Parking At An Intersection?
Parkazine reader Serena sent in this great question: "When parking by an intersection with clearly marked crosswalks, how far over (if at all) can your car's bumper be over the painted white line? The line drawing the boundary between the street (okay to park) and the cross walk (obviously not okay to park) is usually about 10" wide...would it be okay to have my front bumper extending over the line even a little bit?"
Answer: This is one where the answer will be different with every traffic officer who sees your car. Of course they want to write NYC parking tickets (that’s their job and they are judged by how many they write), but believe it or not, some will actually cut you some slack.
To be safe, you really shouldn’t go past the white line - I’d say it’s ok to be up to and include that white line, but not be past it. Some traffic officers will let you extend maybe a foot or so past the line, but like I said, it’s up to their individual discretion and some won’t cut you any slack at all. So park carefully and don’t take the chance unless absolutely necessary.
