Are The Traffic Officers In Your Area Writing Parking Tickets Too Early?

In New York City, traffic and police officers have been caught writing parking tickets up to three minutes early and while not yet proven, this has also been reported in Boston, San Francisco and other Parking Challenged cities. Traffic officers were caught writing these bogus parking tickets

Why Are People Parking In Front Of Houses Of Worship When It's Clearly Not Legal To Do So?

Parkazine Reader Berl recently emailed us this question: "I'm continually astonished that people going to church can "legally" park in spots clearly marked as No Parking all over the place during church hours. Talk about separation of church and state! Why does worship all of a sudden give you the right to park where you please?"

When Is It OK To Park AT A Bus Stop?

Parkazine Reader Erwin recently emailed us this question: "My question is about bus stops. On sundays and sometimes later in the evenings, I see vehicles parked in the bus stop area. What is the ruling for this area in terms of parking? The sign says "No Standing" with no time indicated or "anytime". Also, is there a difference between "No Standing Anytime" and plainly "No Standing"?

Aren't All The National Bank Holidays Also Parking Holidays?

Parkazine Reader Donna asked this great question: "I received a ticket in the amount of $115 for parking at a "no standing commercial meter zone, Mon-Fri 8a-6p" on Monday, 1/21 (Martin Luther King Day which is a federally recognized holiday). I found this excerpt from the NYC DOT site: On major legal holidays stopping, standing and parking are permitted except in areas where stopping, standing and parking rules are in effect seven days a week (for example, "No Standing Anytime"). I'm just wondering if the word "commercial" on the ticket negates this NYC DOT law. Can you advise? Thanks!"

What exactly does Double Parking mean?

Parkazine Reader Marcel asked this great question: "I have a bar/restaurant on 3rd ave b/t 93-94st in Manhattan. I frequently drop off goods at my place. I have received numerous parking tickets for double parking, even if the car is running, the door is open and I am 2 feet away handing something off. What is the actual definition of double parking, is there any allowance for business owners in front of their business, and do you think these can be appealed?"

Can My Car Be Just a Few Inches Over The White Line?

Parkazine Reader Megs asked a question that a lot of people seem to wonder about: "I found a spot where the front rim of my car passes over the first white line before cross walk begins. Should I get a ticket for this? I am upset cuz I did once and I just want to check since there are no official rules or guidebook that the DMV gives out when we freaking get a license."

If Xmas or New Year’s Falls on a Sunday, Are The Parking Rules Still Suspended?

Last week we sent out the 2008 Alternate Side of the Street/Holiday parking calendar which shows on which dates parking rules are suspended because of holidays. Remember that on major national holidays, all parking regulations are suspended except the ones that are always in effect like "No Parking Anytime", "No Standing Anytime" or "No Stopping Anytime". Parkazine Reader Scott asked a very good question: "What if parking is restricted on Sundays. Can you still park there on Xmas and New Years? Thanks."

An Indispensable Tool: 2008 Holiday Parking Suspensions Calendar, Good For Most Big Cities

Anyone who parks even occasionally in big cities should save this parking calendar. Although it is in fact the 2008 NYC parking calendar, the most of the info in it will be applicable to any big city. Please note that the lines in bold face type are the national holidays when all parking rules (except those that are always in effect like "No Parking Anytime", "No Standing Anytime" or "No Stopping Anytime") are suspended.

Much Needed Vacation

We will be taking a short break from Parkazine over the coming holidays, as we will be on vacation for a few weeks and many of you are likely too busy to read it anyway! So this will be the last Parkazine of the year; we’ll be back in full force in early January with your 2008 alternate side of the street parking calendar. Until then, I wish you happy holidays and a great start to the New Year - which happen to be the focus of this week’s Parkazine:

Park Without Paying Almost Anywhere In NYC and Boston on Xmas Day & New Year’s Day

Street parking this Christmas Day (12/25/07) and New Year’s Day (1/1/08) is easier than you might think. Many people don't realize that on major national holidays (including Christmas Day & New Year’s Day), not only alternate side of the street regulations but almost all street parking regulations and all parking meters are suspended. This means that not only can you park at meters for free, but you can basically park anywhere without a problem UNLESS it is a place where street parking is NEVER allowed (i.e., if the sign says "No Parking Anytime", "No Standing Anytime" or "No Stopping Anytime"). Since Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both fall on Tuesdays this year, there will be a lot of great places to park. Many people won’t realize, won’t understand or will be too confused to take advantage of where you can and cannot park, so you’ll be ahead of the game by knowing that:

Can My Car Be A Little Over The Crosswalk Line When Parking At An Intersection?

Parkazine reader Serena sent in this great question: "When parking by an intersection with clearly marked crosswalks, how far over (if at all) can your car's bumper be over the painted white line? The line drawing the boundary between the street (okay to park) and the cross walk (obviously not okay to park) is usually about 10" wide...would it be okay to have my front bumper extending over the line even a little bit?"

Answer: This is one where the answer will be different with every traffic officer who sees your car. Of course they want to write NYC parking tickets (that’s their job and they are judged by how many they write), but believe it or not, some will actually cut you some slack.
